TI-30XS vs TI-84: Which do you need?
Is the TI-30XS allowed on the SAT and ACT?
Yes. The TI-30XS MultiView is approved by College Board for the SAT and by ACT, Inc. for the ACT. It is also permitted on most AP exams that allow a scientific calculator. For IB Math, check with your coordinator — IB papers that require a Graphic Display Calculator (GDC) need the TI-84, not the TI-30XS. If your exam allows any scientific calculator without graphing capability, the TI-30XS qualifies.
What can the TI-30XS MultiView do?
The TI-30XS is a four-line scientific calculator. Its standout features compared to older single-line calculators:
- MathPrint display — fractions, exponents, and roots appear exactly as they do in textbooks, not as 3/8 or 2^4
- MultiView screen — see up to four calculations at once, scroll back through history, and compare results without re-entering
- Fraction and decimal conversion — switch between formats instantly with the toggle key
- Table mode — generate a table of (x, y) values for any expression, useful for algebra and pre-calculus
- Basic statistics — one-variable and two-variable stats, mean, standard deviation
- Scientific notation — enters and displays with proper superscript exponents
TI-30XS or TI-84 — do you need to upgrade?
The answer depends entirely on which exams and courses you are taking:
- SAT or ACT only: TI-30XS is enough. It handles all the math on these tests and costs around $17.
- AP Statistics or AP Calculus: You need the TI-84. These courses require graphing, normalcdf, LinReg, and other functions the TI-30XS does not have.
- AP exams other than Statistics and Calculus (Chemistry, Physics, Biology): TI-30XS is usually sufficient — these AP exams do not require graphing.
- IB Math AA or AI: You need a GDC — the TI-84 qualifies. The TI-30XS does not.
- General high school math (Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus): TI-30XS handles this comfortably. Save the TI-84 for when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the TI-30XS MultiView allowed on the SAT?▾
Yes. The TI-30XS MultiView is on the College Board approved calculator list for the SAT. It covers all the math tested on the SAT, including algebra, advanced math, and problem-solving.
What is the difference between TI-30XS and TI-30XIIS?▾
The TI-30XS MultiView has a four-line display and MathPrint, which shows fractions and exponents as they appear in textbooks. The TI-30XIIS has a two-line display and lacks MathPrint. For exam use, the TI-30XS MultiView is the better choice.
Can the TI-30XS do fractions?▾
Yes. Press the n/d key (ALPHA + Y=) to enter a fraction directly. To convert a decimal result to a fraction, press the toggle key (labeled with fraction/decimal arrows). The MathPrint display shows the fraction in stacked form, not as 3/8.
Does the TI-30XS do statistics?▾
Yes, basic statistics. It calculates mean, standard deviation, and performs one-variable and two-variable statistical analysis. It does not support the advanced distribution functions (normalcdf, invNorm, T-Test) that the TI-84 has — those require the TI-84 for AP Statistics.
Is the TI-30XS approved for AP exams?▾
Yes, for most AP exams. AP exams that require a Graphic Display Calculator (AP Statistics, AP Calculus) need the TI-84 or equivalent GDC. For AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Biology, and other AP subjects, the TI-30XS is permitted.
